Will players enjoy Starfield WAY more, if the single player story is what was appealing to them in SC in the first place, for some reason? Absolutely! Will a lot of players just play both depending on what they feel like? I'd imagine so, how is that bad? I do think a good chunk of the SC playerbase will also play Starfield, but they are completely different games, and no one is joining SC for its great storyline or fantastic villains or exciting quests, and no one is joining SC for its realistic gameplay, ship controls and multiplayer fun.

The only thing that's similar is the sci-fi setting, some of the art direction and how you have a fleet of space ships you can use.

If SQ42 ever releases, it's gonna be single player, but it has the same bottom line plus a grand story behind it.Ĭomparing these games is like comparing The Outer Worlds or KOTOR with X and/or Wing Commander.

The entire point of it is the simulation of your ship, similar to Flight Simulator (and with a comparable amount of buttons needed and 2 full flightsticks recommended) and player interactions, with some quests and randomly generated tasks to have aims besides trading, mining, harvesting or bounty hunting. SC is a x-wing/freelancer/x-esque massively multiplayer space sim with hand crafted entire planets. Space travel exists for getting from A to B, has the most barebones ship technicalities with x-wing style energy distribution and is barely a focus of the game. Starfield is a Skyrim-esque, story based single player RPG with rudimentary space traversal and mostly procedurally generated planets, but incredibly well crafted story locations and quests, NPCs and side stories. It’s the fact that systems like map and inventory take ages to be implemented, in a “tier 0” barely functional stage and then go unaddressed for years because “it’s a temporary version anyway and we are reworking it in the future” and so on.Ĭlick to shrink. The gameplay loops aren't just different, they are barely overlapping. Or stupid shit like “physics- based push and pull at zero gravity” (WHY? The “floating at zero G”you can have in your suit is a basic but perfectly functional). It’s the fact that scope creep and a constant and pointless chase of “realism” translate in some AWFUL and taxing ideas like “physicalized cargo” that at some point you will be apparently supposed to load/unload manually in your ship if you want to trade goods between stations, etc. It’s the fact that every progress report month after month is a running gag of devs blabbing about the most pointless convoluted minutiae while core gameplay systems still don’t work properly. It’s the fact that SQ42 is constantly “at least two years away” it’s the fact that you still can’t enter a goddamn bunker or building and have the most basic shooter gallery experience because the AI breaks down if you stare at the server too intensely. NO, the ACTUAL problems with Star Citizen are very different. In fact, pretty much the only meaningful thing you are left to do if you want any time of mid-term goal to strive for. It’s also worth noting that AT LEAST SO FAR (and this may be subject to change in the future) an entry level ship gives you access to everything the game offers (very little) and “grinding money to purchase ships in-game” is something trivially easy to do. I’m definitely not a fan of how the game is monetized but I also don’t give a flying fuck if they are “selling JPGs” (note: false and outdated information since at this point the overwhelming majority of ships are build in in the client) nor I give a damn if a massive city-sized capital ship targeted at mega-guilds costs 40K dollars, because I don’t have any fucking use for it to begin with. Click to shrink. You are mostly spot on.įrankly at this point even as someone who’s pretty much a Negative Nancy about this game I find any attempt to have a as meaningful conversation about it on this forum a complete waste of time, because most people are in just for the drive-by hot take and have no fucking clue of what they are rambling about.
